We’ve heard a story repeatedly—a story that tells us, as African women, to limit our dreams and settle for less because society has defined our value within the bounds of marriage, tradition, or what others think we can achieve. This narrative tells us that dreaming too big will cost us opportunities for love, acceptance, or even respect. But today, I want to tell you something different.
You are allowed to dream big. In fact, you must.
Why We Need to Dream Big
Our daughters and the young girls who look up to us are watching. They need to see that it’s possible to dream big and achieve greatness. When we step boldly into our ambitions, we pave the way for them to do the same. We show them that their dreams are valid and that they, too, can achieve whatever they set their minds to.
My Story: Choosing to Dream Big
The Power of Visualization
Dreaming big starts with believing that it’s possible. Visualization is a powerful tool that can help you turn your dreams into reality. Take a moment to close your eyes and imagine your ideal future. What does it look like? What do you want to achieve? Who do you want to become?
Write down your vision in detail. Be specific. Don’t just say, “I want to be successful.” Define what success means to you. Does it mean running your own business? Earning a degree? Travelling the world? Whatever it is, write it down and revisit it often. Visualization helps you stay focused and motivated, even when challenges arise.
Taking Action Toward Your Dreams
-
Set Clear Goals: Break your big dream into smaller, manageable goals. For example, if you want to start a business, your first goal might be researching your market or creating a business plan.
-
Learn and Grow: Equip yourself with the knowledge and skills you need to achieve your goals. Take courses, read books, and seek mentorship from people who have walked the path you aspire to follow.
-
Build a Support System: Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your vision. This could be friends, family, or even an online community of like-minded women.
-
Stay Resilient: Challenges will come, but don’t let them stop you. Remember that every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Keep going, even when the road feels tough.
-
Celebrate Your Wins: Every step forward, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. Acknowledge your progress and use it as motivation to keep moving forward.
