In order to achieve your long-term goals easily, it is essential to turn them into small doable tasks. Here is how.

How to break down your long-term goals into smaller achievable tasks

Make your goal measurable

To make your goal measurable you need to determine the time you intend to achieve the goal and the result you want to accomplish in terms of an amount or quantity For example if you want to lose weight you have to say how much weight you want to lose and the time, period or date you expect to lose it - "I want to lose 100kg by December 2023" for example. If the goal can't be attributed to a figure then use descriptions or characteristics. For example, if your goal is to look a certain way by December 2023 then characterise how you want to look. For example "I want to look more physically attractive by December 2023", characteristics - smooth skin, flat tummy, beautiful hair and clothes etc.

Divide the time frame you set for your goal into shorter periods

I recommend the short period should not exceed six months except really necessary. This period may vary with the goal so be flexible and realistic with it. If the goal is a long term goal that goes up to a year then divide the year into two, three or four short term periods which will give you short periods of six months, four months or three months respectively. If the goal is short term then you can divide it into days or weeks.

Determine what you want to accomplish within the first three, four our six months for each goal

These accomplishments are milestones and the more you accomplish your milestones the closer you get to achieving your goal. You may need to research and do some calculations to determine your milestones. Use the targets you set in the main goal and divide it by the number of shorter periods you created to know your short term target. For example if you want to save one million by the end of the year and you separated the year into four parts for this goal then you'll have to divide the one million by four to know how much you should save in the first three months of the year.

I will advice you take into consideration your abilities and your reality when setting milestones. You may be more productive during certain periods and less productive in others so take the time to think and consider internal and external parameters in advance when setting your milestones.

Plan how to achieve the milestones by turning them into tasks

What do you need to do to achieve the milestone? Write them down as doable weekly or daily tasks. For example your main goal is to lose 100kg and your milestone is to lose 25kg in the next three months, then your tasks will be to workout three times a week, eat vegetables five times a week, drink 8 litters of water a day, etc.

Your tasks are the actions you need to take to accomplish the milestone you set.

When this is done, what is left is to take action and work on the tasks so that you can accomplish your milestones and achieve your dreams.

At what stage is your life? Are you happy or satisfied with your life? Do you feel successful with your achievements in terms of your finances, relationship, family etc?

Point out the specific things you are not happy with or things that you want to change in your life and write them down

List them and be really specific. Instead of saying I'm not happy with my finances say I'm not happy with how much I am earning or I'm not happy with my savings or my profits.

Now ask yourself how you do you see or visualize your life in the future. What do you want your life to be like in the future? Write it down

Do this with each aspect of your life - finances, family, happiness, kids, self-development, physical look, health, fitness, etc. For example; I see myself earning more money (you can specify the amount) and attaining financial independence this year.

Look at the lists of things you want to change and how you visualize your life and use that to write out your goals

Combine points that are similar. For example, if you stated that you are not happy with your earnings and you visualize earning for example a million a month or 12 million a year then you can combine this to make a financial goal like this: "I want to improve my earnings to at least one million a month or at least 12 million a year".

Another example is if you said you are not happy with your appearance which looks older than your age and you visualize yourself looking younger and more trendy then you can put it this way: "To improve my physical appearance to look younger or ageless and trendy or classy".

One more example; If you said you are not happy with how you provide for your family and you visualize providing their needs easily and abundantly you can put it his way: 'To have the means to provide my family needs easily and abundantly".

There may be things that you visualize that are not on the list of things that you want to change. Just add them as one of your goals as well.

Add the time you expect yourself to achieve each goal.

It could be a month or a specific day you feel you can achieve it.

Very important extra advice on how to set your goals

It's good for you to know that knowing your current state in your life and stating the things you are not happy with in your life enables you to determine your real problems and will also help you find the right way to solve it. For example, if you just say your goal is to be rich without asking yourself what the current state of your finances is and visualizing where you want it to be you may miss a few important points because your income may be good enough already and you may just need to review your spending or increase our savings or investments. You may be a millionaire and your definition of being rich is being a billionaire. If you don't define the state of your finances now (that you are a millionaire) and visualize where you want to be (you want to be a billionaire) then you may make efforts that will certainly make you richer but not rich enough to be a billionaire which is your actual goal.

If money needed but you don't have, ask yourself what you can do now which doesn't cost anything while working on getting the money you need.

Make a realistic short term plan

Make plans towards achieving your goals for the next three to six months. For each goal write down what you can achieve within the next three to six months or even as little as one month. This will help you see your goal as a easier and smaller task. It will also enable you to better assess your efforts.

Track your progress

Your goals and tasks should be qualitative and quantitative to enable you track your progress. If your main goal this year is to make lots of profit this year then quantify your goal by adding the month that you actually expect to start making these profits and write down approximately how much money or the number of sales you need to have to make a huge profit. Profits come from sales so if you say you want to sell at least a hundred products a month because a hundred products gives you a huge profit then quantify your goal in that manner. That way you will make sales efforts worth a hundred products and more to meet your target. Also during the months that you don't reach your target of selling a hundred products, you will be able to calculate how close or far away you are from the target. It will also help you to track the months you surpassed your expectations.

Evaluate at the end of the short term period your methods, efforts and progress

After every short term period you planned for, evaluate the methods you used, the efforts you made and your progress. Ask yourself if your efforts so far is getting you closer to your major goal.

Make more plans

Make new or better plans after each short term period. Change your tools or methods if necessary and keep making efforts to achieve your goals.
