Life Lately: Shocking Creche Story, A New Responsibility & Settling Into School Routine

Hi guys, hope you’re doing well. I just want to gist a little about a few things that have been happening lately.

First of all, I came across a post online that really shocked me. Apparently, some crèches and daycares give children sleeping pills just so they can sleep and not disturb. 😳 Can you imagine? I honestly could never have thought of such a thing! When I saw it, I was like, "Ehhh, is this for real?" But then I scrolled through the comment section, and to my surprise, other people were sharing their own experiences—saying they’ve seen or experienced it too. Chai! To be honest, I was just so shocked. This is not only bad, but it’s also risky for the kids, and it just makes me wonder how some people reason. Children are not meant to be drugged into silence. That one really sat with me.

On another note, something positive happened this week too. I got a new responsibility at work—I have an intern! 💃🏾 She’s a volunteer with YCD, the organization I joined as a co-founder, where I also serve as the digital communication lead. To be honest, I had plans of working with interns in the future, but this came earlier than I expected because the student herself reached out and asked for the internship. She’s just starting her first year in university, studying journalism, and she’s already thinking of how to maximise her opportunities to learn. That touched me deeply, because it shows how determined she is about her career. And for me, mentoring and teaching her fits perfectly with one of the main goals of YCD—empowering youths with knowledge and opportunities to build sustainable communities. This Sunday, I’m still recovering from the fatigue I’ve been feeling these past days. Honestly, I can’t even think too long or too deeply, so I’ve just been doing the basics. I had a little cooking dilemma earlier, but I ended up making rice and fish sauce—it was the easiest thing I could handle with the strength I had. I'm trying not to get to the point of burnout, so I'm doing as little as I can so that I can rest more.

I finished cooking and forgot to take a picture of the meal, but here are some of the ingredients I used. I also added a little mix of blended white pepper, njangsa, garlic, and ginger.

Next week marks the third week of school, and I’m slowly settling into the routine—washing and ironing uniforms, prepping snacks and breakfast, helping with homework, and all the little things that come with school life. It’s starting to feel natural again. This week, I’m also planning to make banana beignets and egg for their school snacks. It’s been a while since I made them. Last school year, it was one of my regulars, but this will be my first time making it this academic year. The kids will be so happy.

So yeah, that’s been life lately—a mix of shocking news, new responsibilities, and everyday family routines.
