Why African Women Should Embrace Big Dreams Without Feeling Selfish

"What’s the biggest dream you’ve been afraid to admit?"

So many African women dream big in silence because they’re afraid of being judged. Afraid of looking selfish. Afraid of being called “too ambitious” or “too independent.” Society has conditioned us to feel like wanting more—more success, more wealth, more impact, more freedom—is somehow wrong. But let’s be real… why should ambition feel like a crime?

Today, I want to share a moment when I personally struggled with this guilt and how I overcame it.

When I Felt Guilty for Wanting More

There was a time when I felt selfish for wanting to grow my blog, my business, and my personal brand. I questioned myself:
“Am I being ungrateful for wanting more?”
“Should I just focus on what’s ‘realistic’ instead of chasing these big dreams?”
“What will people think if I prioritize my goals over society’s expectations?”

At one point, I even tried to tone down my ambition—to fit in, to avoid judgment, to stop feeling like I was doing “too much.” But deep inside, I knew I wouldn’t be happy settling for less than what I truly wanted.

So, I made a decision: I will stop apologizing for my ambition.
Because ambition is not greed. Ambition is purpose. Ambition is impact.

Building Self-Confidence as an Ambitious African Woman

The #1 way to build self-confidence is simple: Do the things you planned to do.

Many times, we lose confidence in ourselves not because we aren’t capable, but because we don’t follow through on our own plans.

  • When you keep pushing small tasks aside, it becomes harder to take action on the big ones.

  • When you constantly postpone your goals, you start doubting if you can ever achieve them.

  • When you don’t trust yourself to do the things you say you’ll do, your self-confidence naturally drops.

👉🏾 Action Step: Start small. Keep your promises to yourself—whether it’s writing that blog post, posting on social media, working on your business, or simply waking up early to start your day with intention. The more you show up for yourself, the stronger your confidence becomes.

👉🏾 Own Your Ambition: Don’t let the shame of being ambitious stop you from taking action. Every small step you take towards your dream builds your confidence and brings you closer to success.

Ambition Is Not Greed—It’s a Gift

If you’ve ever felt guilty for dreaming big, here’s what you need to remember:

Wanting more doesn’t mean you’re selfish—it means you recognize your potential.
You’re not taking from anyone by pursuing your dreams—you’re creating space for yourself.
Ambition is not a bad thing—it’s what drives innovation, success, and change.
Your dreams matter, and you deserve to chase them boldly.

Think about it: The world needs more successful, empowered African women who show the next generation that we are capable of greatness. So, if society ever tries to make you feel guilty for your ambition, remind yourself:

I am allowed to want more.
I am allowed to dream big.
I do not have to apologize for my success.
