The rainy season in Cameroon often starts from the month of March to October. During this period there are heavy and light periods of rainfall which vary within the country. Wherever you find yourself on the national territory, there are some basic essentials you need to survive the rainy season. They include the following:
How to survive the rainy season in Cameroon / What you need to survive the rainy season in Cameroon.
An Umbrella
An umbrella is very necessary to protect you from raindrops especially when you go out. There are many types of umbrellas which are suitable for use in Cameroon. There are umbrellas which can be folded and can be put into your handbag. Those types are suitable for ladies and there are other types of umbrellas which are long and these are good for men.
You need an umbrella not only for the rain but for the sun as well. During the rainy season, there are short periods of intense sunshine and this may require the use of an umbrella.
A Scarf
Whether you are a man or a woman you need a scarf to survive the rainy season in Cameroon. The weather is windy and cold when it rains especially in places like the Centre region of Cameroon. Scarfs also protect your clothes from raindrops and mud stains in case of passing cars and motorbikes. According to your needs, you can make a choice between a large and a smaller scarf or a thick or light scarf. In areas such as Douala, it is sometimes hot even when it rains so it is better to use light scarves.
Sunshades
These are important as the sun comes out intensively before it rains. Sunshades help you protect your eyes from the intense sun rays.
A Sweater
Sweaters are very necessary to protect you from the cold during the rainy season. They keep you warm at home and also when you go out because it is often very cold when it rains.
Vaseline
Vaseline is so necessary to rub your legs and hands because the rain will wash off your body cream or lotion very easily. But vaseline can't be washed out by rainwater. So your feet and hands stay hydrated and don't look ashy after the water dries.
'Nchang' shoes
If you don't know what nchang shoes are, they are plastic shoes which can be in the form of slippers, sandals or cover shoes. Nchang is the local name mostly in the English-speaking parts of Cameroon (the North West and South West Regions).
These footwears are best for the rainy season because they are not affected by rainwater or runoff if you are trekking. You can walk with them in the rain unlike leather shoes and other types of shoes that may open up when soaked in water.
There you go with your essentials for surviving the rainy season in Cameroon.
