A Special Breakfast, A Little Self-Care, and Some Relatable Gist | Life In Cameroon

This morning, I felt like treating myself to something a little special. Breakfast in bed. Nothing too fancy, just something that would make me feel good. I made myself an avocado salad, added some boiled eggs, and had it with a slice of bread. Interestingly, I didn’t even finish one slice—and that made me happy because it means I’m staying on track with my weight loss goals. Small wins, right?

With school resumption stress in full swing, I needed this. Just a quiet moment to remind myself that it’s okay to relax and breathe. Sometimes I forget, and I pile on too much, but being intentional about self-care is really helping me.

Speaking of self-care, I finally did my cornrows! By myself! The lines are not the neatest, but honestly, it turned out so fine, and I was so proud of myself. There’s just something about doing your own hair that makes you feel accomplished. Another big thing I’ve been paying attention to is sleep. I’ve realized I need to rest more, and I’m slowly teaching myself that rest is not a luxury—it’s part of taking care of me.

When I went to buy the avocados I used for my breakfast, something funny happened. The seller kept encouraging me to take more since she was giving them away at such a cheap price. At some point, she sighed and said, “Oh la rentrée o”—meaning “it’s school resumption o.” Then she laughed and added that she’s talking like this, meanwhile, she only has one child. “What about those with three, four, or five children?”

We both laughed because I completely understood her point. Honestly, I’ve always wondered the same thing. Even with just two kids, when I think of the money spent on school, I ask myself how parents with more children do it. The sacrifices must be real.

I could sense she was just trying to hustle and make some extra money to cover her son’s academic expenses—he was right there beside her as she sold to me. Before I left, she told me to come back for more once I finished the ones I bought.

After my breakfast, I caught myself laughing at how adulting really works. One minute you’re thinking, ‘Ahh, I’ll spoil myself a little’—maybe buy something small or order food instead of cooking—then the next minute you’re calculating transport money, school fees, and light bills, and you’re like, ‘Hmm, maybe next time.’ 😂 Honestly, balancing the little joys of life with the costs of running a home is an Olympic sport on its own. But I think we all find our little hacks here and there to make it work.
